Yoga During the New Moon: A Time for deep Reflection

"The new moon reminds us that every cycle begins in darkness before it grows into light"

The new moon marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle and is traditionally associated with introspection, rest, and setting intentions. Unlike the energetic and expansive feeling often linked to the full moon, the new moon invites us to slow down, turn inward, and reconnect with ourselves. You may find the energy is very low at this time as you are invited to sink into stillness and restorative practices, such as Yin Yoga or Restorative rather than your usual more active styles of yoga such as flow or ashtanga,

Practising yoga during the new moon can be a powerful way to honour this quieter energy. Gentle, mindful styles such as Yin Yoga, Hatha Yoga, restorative poses, and meditation are particularly well suited to this phase. Rather than focusing on strength or building heat within the body, new moon yoga encourages stillness, awareness, and self-reflection.

Many yogis use the new moon as an opportunity to pause and consider what they wish to cultivate in the coming weeks. Beginning a practice with a few moments of quiet intention-setting can help bring clarity and purpose to both the yoga session and daily life.

Poses such as Child's Pose Legs-Up-The-Wall, and gentle reclined supine twists can help calm the nervous system and create space for reflection. Pairing these movements with slow, conscious breathwork enhances the sense of grounding and renewal.

The moon offers us a gentle invitation at this time to listen in closely and take a moment to take stock during our regular yoga practice, to pause and reflect...to travel into postures with ease and curiosity and to pause in those moments of stillness that little bit longer, what will you discover there?
