The Importance and Use of Props and Support in Yoga Practice

Yoga props and supportive equipment can play an important role in developing a safe, accessible and mindful yoga practice. Props such as blocks, straps, bolsters, blankets, chairs and walls can help practitioners explore yoga with greater awareness, stability and ease.
A block can bring the floor closer in standing poses, while a strap can extend the reach of the arms when the hands cannot comfortably meet. In this way, props allow practitioners to experience the principles of a posture without forcing the body
Props can also provide valuable support and stability. A bolster or blanket may help the body relax in restorative poses, while a wall or chair can provide reassurance during balancing postures. This support can reduce unnecessary muscular effort and allow the practitioner to focus more fully on breathing, alignment and awareness.
Importantly, props can encourage a more compassionate approach to yoga. Instead of pushing through discomfort in order to achieve an idealised shape, practitioners can use support to further listen to their bodies and work within that space on the edge of discomfort to find release in the posture
This can make the practice more sustainable and enjoyable at all stages
Props are therefore not tools for making yoga “easier.” They can also further the practice and deepen the connection & exploration into the body, inviting us to be fully present. An experienced practitioner may use a block, strap or bolster to investigate a posture in a new way, improve alignment, deepen awareness or remain in a pose for longer
Ultimately, the purpose of yoga props is to support the practitioner
Used thoughtfully, they help create a balance between effort and ease, encouraging greater stability, awareness and connection with the body
